An exciting addition to the Bonsall community is taking shape along Camino Del Rey. Bonsall Community Park, a long-anticipated recreational destination, is expected to welcome its first visitors in late 2026, marking a significant milestone for this North San Diego County community.
Situated on a 63-acre property near West Lilac Road, across from Bonsall Elementary School and the Bonsall Community Center, the park will provide residents with dedicated public recreational facilities and outdoor gathering spaces. The first phase of development encompasses more than 24 acres, introducing a variety of amenities designed for recreation, relaxation, and community activities.
From Golf Course to Community Park
The property has a notable history in Bonsall. Formerly part of the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course, the land was acquired by the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation in 2015 as part of the broader San Luis Rey River Park Master Plan.
The master plan envisions more than 1,700 acres of parks, recreational trails, and preserved open space extending approximately nine miles along the San Luis Rey River, between Interstate 15 and the historic Old Bonsall Bridge.
Bonsall Community Park is one of two designated active recreation areas within this larger regional vision. Its location near existing residential neighborhoods, schools, and community facilities makes it particularly accessible to local families.
Following extensive public outreach, community meetings, and planning, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved the park's final design concept in September 2021. The County awarded the initial construction contract in December 2024, and a ceremonial groundbreaking took place on February 18, 2025.
What to Expect in Phase 1
The first phase of Bonsall Community Park will introduce more than 24 acres of developed recreational space, offering both active and passive recreation opportunities.
Sports and outdoor recreation will be central to the park's initial amenities. New soccer and multi-use fields will provide space for organized athletics and recreational activities, while expansive open lawns will accommodate informal games and outdoor enjoyment.
For families, a large, shaded playground will offer dedicated play space, complemented by shaded picnic shelters equipped with tables. Walking paths, benches, and landscaped areas will provide additional opportunities for exercise, relaxation, and enjoying Bonsall's outdoor environment.
The park will also include a combined restroom and park office building, bicycle parking, monument signs, and an informational kiosk.
Improvements to the surrounding infrastructure are part of Phase 1 as well. These include sidewalk and intersection enhancements along Camino Del Rey, two new vehicle access points, and designated vehicle parking.
The landscape design incorporates drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plantings and an efficient irrigation system. Biofiltration basins will help manage stormwater runoff, while existing and newly planted trees will contribute to the park's landscape.
Two designated residential sites for volunteer park hosts are also included. These hosts will support park operations, maintenance, and visitor assistance.
Part of a Larger Vision
While Phase 1 represents a substantial investment in Bonsall's recreational infrastructure, it is only the beginning of the property's long-term development.
The County's approved overall park concept includes additional amenities such as baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, a skate park, bike skills park, outdoor exercise facilities, multi-use trails, and a designated dog park.
These additional features are part of future development phases and are not included in the initial opening. Their construction will depend on future funding and planning.
The broader San Luis Rey River Park Master Plan also emphasizes recreational trail connections and the preservation of natural open space throughout the San Luis Rey River corridor.
A New Community Destination for Bonsall
The development of Bonsall Community Park represents an important addition to the community's public amenities. With its combination of sports facilities, shaded gathering areas, walking paths, and open green spaces, the park will create new opportunities for residents of all ages to enjoy outdoor recreation close to home.
For a community characterized by its rural surroundings, scenic landscapes, and outdoor lifestyle, the park introduces recreational facilities within an established setting.
Phase 1 is anticipated to open in late 2026, with the County currently identifying a November–December opening window. An exact public opening date has not yet been announced.
As construction progresses toward completion, the former San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course is entering a new chapter, transforming a historically recreational property into a public space designed to serve Bonsall and surrounding communities for years to come.
